Event Overview
Scream at the Beach's story begins just a short time ago in 2001 when a Thematic Designer named Henry Miller, owner of TW Productions LLC, opened his first haunt in Portland. Rated the number one haunted event its first year, the intense theming afforded guests a chance to take a trip to a place that previously only existed in their imagination.

Thousands flocked to Scream at the Beach when it first opened and year two saw a doubling of guest attendance as the number of attractions grew from one to four in just one year. Year three saw Dave Thombleson arrive with his Theater Macabre, and the addition of Nigel's Playhouse just for kids, making Scream at the Beach the largest collection of Halloween haunts in the region.

In 2004, Tom Johnson joined the production team and helped to create Elshoff Manor, the highest rated attraction of the season. Jason Ropp also came on board to produce Alien Invasion. The Forbidden Temple saw updates too, with new scenes and advanced animations added. The Scream at the Beach Zombies, directed by Jennifer Fowler-Gomez, also made their appearance, offering free shows and interactive fun.

In 2005, the production became the most popular event of its kind in the region. New shows, a photo studio, and behind the scenes facilities moved the whole event to a new level of professionalism. Crowd control measures were implemented to keep the lines in order and moving quickly, and a "Guest Relations" army served guest needs.

For the past two seasons America Online ranked Scream at the Beach as one of the "Top 13 Haunts" in the nation and attendance at the event increased dramatically. Nearly eveyone who visited said they came because of positive word of mouth, and a large number returned several times, bringing more and more friends each time. Scream at the Beach is considered to be the gold standard of regional "screampark" entertainment. The attractions are bigger and bolder than ever, offering cutting-edge, one-of-kind tours and so much more.

Miller related that he and his talented production team have "invested over $1,000,000 in labor and materials and seven years of ongoing research, planning and construction to make this experience real. If the overwhelmingly positive reactions of our guests continue as they have been, we see ourselves growing into one of the largest haunted events in the nation."

Henry Miller is proud of Scream at the Beach's rise to “monsterrific” standing in the Halloween entertainment industry and gives most of the credit to the cast of monsters who helped to make all the wet pants possible. He relates that "you can dream, design and create the most frightening place in the whole world, but it requires people to make the nightmare a reality."

Miller has been designing and building haunted houses for companies and non-profit organizations from the early age of eight on. He also has over 20 years of experience designing environments for private and corporate special events, award-winning trade show booths, weddings, and custom staging all over the United States. He brings this experience and applies his own vision and imagination to create a new form of Halloween family entertainment. He imagined a haunted event large in scope with high standards of design and execution, and with an appeal to a broad range of ages and scare tolerances, while offering it at affordable admission prices.

Production work on Scream at the Beach takes place year-round. Each season brings new surprises—including new high-quality attractions and outrageous shows that keeps 'em coming back for more. Most of the props, costumes and masks are custom made, and all murals and paintings are original. Since its completion, Scream at the Beach has been inviting monsters from all over to move into the gloomy setting for some "playtime fun."

To date, no one has been lost at any of the Scream at the Beach activities (but we're still hoping).

Producer Bio
Henry Miller Scream at the Beach is the brainchild of Henry Miller, President of TW Productions LLC, a Thematic Design company. Mr. Miller had been involved in the Special Events industry designing, building and installing thematic interiors for corporate theme parties, trade shows, staging for meetings, and haunted houses for over 15 years before deciding to dive into the haunt business full time.

"I've always been an avid fan of Halloween, even as a child when I would haunt my basement for the neighborhood kids," said Mr. Miller. "As I got older I advanced to producing church, club and school events, and finally, became a designer in the Special Events Industry for corporate and private parties."

Mr. Miller's designs have won many awards including first place for booth design at Linux World and first place at two of Portland's Bravo tradeshows. His design work has provided dramatic settings for the Superbowl Pre-game VIP Party and major corporate events including American Express, Mercedes Benz, Nike, Philip Morris and The Walt Disney Company, to name a few.

Henry Miller had an early interest in haunted houses. He can tell you stories of how he haunted his own home and the homes of his relativies, to the horror of his family and neighborhood friends. He produced his first haunted house for the community at the young age of 12. The one-night haunted house consisted of just four scenes and was constructed of cardboard and used a single record player for sound effects. Since that early date, he continued to involve himself in haunted house design and construction throughout his informative years and professional career in the Special Events Industry. Today (many years later), Henry and his talented team of monster makers produce Scream at the Beach, one of the "Top 13 Haunts" in the nation.

In October of 2001, Scream at the Beach was born when Henry quit his job to pursue a career in producing his own professional haunted house. Investing his own monies and, with the help of like-minded friends and working long hours, he created a thematic masterpiece, rich with details that made the experience seem real. Their efforts paid off when the haunt opened to rave reviews, including a first-place ranking, a heavy turn-out, and very positive peer and industry leader comments.

Last season, Scream at the Beach entertained approximately 30,000 patrons and raised thousands of dollars for local charities. The production involves over 400 volunteers and a multitude of area companies who donate their time, talent and dollars to this endeavor.

Reviews and the Media

  • AOL ranked Scream at the Beach as one of the "Top 13 Haunts" in the nation in 2006.
  • The Roots of All Evil reviewers rate hanuted houses. Here are a couple of their comments:
In 2007 they ranked the Hayden Institute for the Criminally Insane as one of the Top # Haunts in the area, saying: "The patients in this psych ward are thoroughly in touch with their inner cuckoo, and it’s a pleasure to revel in all their issues, tics, and disorders. They bounce on beds. They shake their heads. They convincingly feign that they are dead. One limber loony maniacally taunts passersby from a unique corner position while another makes a point with face-protruding syringes. Yes, the reconstituted Institute is well done with great performances, lighting effects, and makeup. Now, someone give them their meds! ********* As we’ve said before, Scream at the Beach is a quality production with a festive atmosphere and a variety of while-you-wait entertainments that make it quite the event. This year brings the addition of carnival rides, concessions, a Halloween store, and an outdoor rock band to make it an even bigger circus of the season than before. Scream at the Beach boasts many wonderfully costumed and appropriately cast actors who not only populate the haunts themselves but the waiting areas as well. While these houses may not induce the terror some haunt connoisseurs seek, they are extremely well done and polished, with excellently rendered props and sets and loads of passionate actors. And this year, they seem to provide more stretches of total darkness than other local haunts. With all that the Scream at the Beach machine has to offer, it is an excellent family event that fills the mid-level scare zone where not many options are available."
In 2004 they rated the Forbidden Temple as their #1 pick, saying: "The Scream at the Beach folks nailed it dead on with an attraction that has all the components a truly great haunt must have to deliver a knock-out punch: pitch-black darkness, a plethora of live personalities, touchie-feelies, and fantastic props all make for a thrilling adventure. Expert use of darkness will have you groping the slimy walls or your companions (Oh, wait! That’s not your companion!) to jockey for a safer position—not! One scene à la Indiana Jones will leave you pressing on for more, and there is more…lots more! You’ll be subjected to at least ten minutes of madness in The Forbidden Temple, provided you don’t sprint. Of course, you’ll want to run. Ominous cloaked figures and assorted frightful wonders gear up to extreme startle mode, rendering the large “brew master” sequence an entertaining respite from all the screaming and hyperventilating you’ve been doing. A total blast!"
  • Family Circle Magazine selected only 6 haunted houses in the country as recommended picks for Fall Family Fun in 2004. Scream at the Beach was one of them, and the only one on the west coast.
  • A professional haunt designer for Brutal Planet in Denver said he enjoyed himself very much and was amazingly impressed by the professionalism of it all. He said that Scream at the Beach is in a position to compete with the very best that he's seen [in the country].
  • One unexpected famous visitor to the haunt included Phil Morris, a guru in the Halloween industry and a popular international conference speaker. He stopped by the mall to find out what all the excitement was about, arriving in front of the castle where he stood for a few moments with his jaw dropped trying to figure out if it was a haunted house (he first thought it was a fancy theme restaurant like Rainforest Café). He said that he has seen a lot of haunted houses in his day and that what he saw was too good to be a haunted house! He then made his way backstage to find the people responsible for its design so he could rave about how wonderful it was. He even suggested that we form a partnership with his company to produce haunted house designs for haunts all over the world.
  • Another local reviewer of haunts said: “Elshoff Manor is a classic style haunted mansion with a good mix of scares, effects, and general spookiness. Attention to detail is excellent and this haunt has a good balance of effects and actors.” He also commented that the Forbidden Temple’s “special effects are their best yet, continuing to rival major theme parks in scope.”
  • MadMartian.com said Scream at the Beach had "The best design work and technology of all the Portland haunts. It also has some original ideas not seen in other houses. This is the only house that cleverly uses misdirection to surprise you."
  • The Oregonian listed our event as their "Editor's Choice" and gave it their "Family Friendly" stamp of approval, the only local haunt to earn both ratings.
  • Another industry peer pointed out in 2004 that three of the top four haunts in the state were under our roof.
  • Scream at the Beach is a regular on PBS, AM Northwest and Good Day Oregon shows. Plus the Mercury, Columbian, and Oregonian have written great stories about Scream at the Beach. We have also run commercials on the WB, FOX and KPTV television stations and on Jammin' 95, Radio Disney, KNRK, Charlie, KGON, Rosie 105, and others.

  • Why does he do this?!?
